HGV Speed Limits may change

Proposals to increase the HGV speed limits by the Government are designed to get the economy moving

The current single carriageway limit for vehicles over 7.5 tonnes is 40mph but this could be raised to 50mph in a bid to reduce congestion, tailbacks and driver frustration. Roads minister for the Government said it would give a boost to businesses of £30 million per year.

Safety groups have condemned the proposals, stating that the reduced limits for HGVs are there for a reason, which is large heavy vehicles take longer to slow down and in the event of a collision; the outcome could be on a catastrophic scale if speeds were increased.
