Unfinished roadworks cost taxpayers £70 million

Contractors that dig up roads for utility companies do not leave the roads in a satisfactory condition, leaving the bill to the taxpayer

The Local Government Association, which represents 350 councils nationwide, wants councils to be given the power to ensure that roadworks are completed properly with the minimum of disruption to motorists. It has been suggested that utility companies pay a deposit before commencing work and that more control should be given on when and how often repairs can take place.
