300 lives a year could be saved by seatbelts

Statistics published by the government show that a third of those killed in car accidents were not wearing seatbelts

The motoring organisation, the AA, is calling for tougher action on those flouting the law with penalty points on licences as well as a fine, more spot checks by Police and even seatbelt education courses  run in a similar way to speed awareness courses that are offered to those breaking the law. The rates of young men not wearing a seatbelt, rear seat passengers and company car drivers were lower than average.
