A quirk in the Irish court system that allowed over 17,000 drivers to avoid penalty points on their licence is to be closed
The loophole is a result of there being no legal requirement for court staff to pass on licence details to the Road Safety Authority. On occasions drivers wouldn’t bring their licence to court or court staff simply hasn’t collected the information. The Irish Courts say that the matter of following up such an offence of not presenting a licence is not a matter for the Courts Service. Changes to the Irish 2009 Road Traffic Act will prevent this loophole by insisting that drivers bring along at least a photocopy of their licence.
