National Travel Survey

The DfT has published its National Travel Survey 2008, providing a useful insight into the nations travel habits

Key findings from the survey include:

  • Licence ownership in men has remained constant at about 81%
  • The percentage of women owning a licence increased from 57% to 65%
  • Car journeys accounted for 63% of all trips made and nearly 80% of total distance travelled
  • Women make more shorter trips than men who tend to travel further
  • Commuting accounted for 19% of all trips made and 28% of distance travelled
  • Shopping accounted for 19% of trips but only 13% of distance travelled
  • 6% increase in people ordering goods online for home delivery
