Super Lorries on British roads
Draft European Union proposals could allow lorries weighing 60 tonnes and 82ft long on UK roads
The plans are designed to lower carbon emissions by reducing the number of repeat journeys Lorries have to make due to the larger load carrying capacity. Arguments against the plans include whether bridges will have to be strengthened and how will they cope with roundabouts. Current HGV’s have a greater risk of being involved in an accident than car traffic, super lorries would make the situation worse with issues such as manoeuvring and visibility. The Department for Transport ran trials last year but abandoned the idea over fears of slowing up traffic and increasing the accident risk.
