Poor state of road markings
White lines on UK’s road network has deteriorated to a dangerous level and barely visible
Road Safety Markings Association (RSMA) presented findings from research into the centre lines of 500 miles of the UK network. The study analysed the line’s retro-reflectivity which if found to be below 80 millicandelas means it needs to be replaced, under Government standards.
Nearly 51% of the 500 miles of roads fell below this level, 23% fell into the schedule for repair bracket with a reading between 80 and 100 millicandelas. Only 7% scored the highest rating. Road markings are the simplest driving aid to motorists and most cost-effective to a cash-strapped Government.
