Radar guided parking

Volkswagen has developed a new gadget to help Drivers Park their cars

The system, called park assist, uses sensors mounted front and rear that will scan a parking space once the Park Assist button has been pressed. If the space is of suitable size, the driver has to come to a stop and engage reverse gear. Once done the system takes over the steering of the vehicle, allowing the driver to control the vehicle by using the accelerator and brake pedals. The intended path of the vehicle into the parking space is shown on a display. The system is currently fitted to Touran MPV and Golf Plus models which market to school run drivers. Both Ford and Mercedes have developed similar systems for their range. In a recent survey of over 4,000 drivers by a leading insurance company it was found that 75% of female drivers find parallel parking into a space too difficult compared to 9% of men.
