Possible changes to the law on drink and drug driving

The Government is to appoint an independent expert to investigate possible changes to the law on drink and drug driving

Sir Peter North, is an internationally legal expert whose previous work led to the Road Traffic Act 1991, will look into whether changes to the law and processes can be effective in reducing the number of casualties through drink or drug driving. His report is due by the end of March 2010. The offence of driving whilst over the limit or unfit due to drink or drugs could result in a ban of 12 months, a fine up to £5,000 and possible 6 months in prison.
