Brief guide to the definition of dual carriageways
A dual carriageway is defined as a road that has a central reservation separating lanes of traffic. The reservation can be anything other than a pedestrian refuge. The number of lanes is not defined although generally 2 or more lanes in both directions are common. It is the central reservation that defines a dual carriageway. There is often confusion especially when lower speed limits are applicable to vehicles such as HGV’s.
