Global road traffic injury statistics

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has released statistics for the Global status report on road safety 2013

The report focuses on highlighting five important risk factors – speed, drink–driving, motorcycle helmets, seat-belts and child restraints – which have been shown to lead to reductions in road traffic injuries.

Globally, road traffic injuries are the eighth leading cause of death and the leading cause of death for young people aged 15–29. Around 1.25 million people die every year on the world’s roads with the hardest hit area the African Region and middle-income countries.
