Huhne quits politics

Former Energy Secretary, Chris Huhne, has quit politics following his guilty plea to perverting the course of justice

The charge related to a speeding offence from 2003 along the M11 from Stanstead when Mr Huhne was coming back from a European conference. Huhne announced his decision to step down as the Liberal Democrat MP for Eastleigh an hour after leaving Southwark Crown Court.

Huhne is due to be sentenced and the judge told him that “you should have no illusions whatsoever as to the sort of sentence that you are likely to receive”. The maximum penalty for perverting the course of justice is life imprisonment.
