How to increase your MPG
Top tips from the Institute of Advanced Motorists to help reduce your fuel costs and increase your mpg
- Keeping a constant speed whilst driving is more fuel efficient than frequent accelerating and braking
- Ensure your tyres are properly inflated to the correct pressure; under-inflated tyres increase fuel consumption
- Remove heavy items that you may have in the boot of the car, the extra weight increases fuel consumption
- Keep windows closed when driving at high speeds, this keeps the aerodynamics of the car
- Don’t use air-con at low speeds, open a window instead
- Avoid over-revving the engine and try changing gears earlier
- With speed humps drive at a constant speed rather than accelerating and braking
- Engines work more efficiently when warm, if your journey is a short one could you walk or cycle
