Motorway speed limit increase
A road safety review could see motorway speed limits increased to 80mph
Philip Hammond, the Transport Secretary, suggests that increasing the motorway speed limit to 80mph could cut journey times and give a needed boost to the economy. This could be used in conjunction with temporary limits in areas with heavy congestion. Mr Hammond stated that there needs to be a balanced view towards deciding on speed limits between safety, the economy and the environment, rather than citing safety as the main concern.
